Russia gives ultimatum for Ukrainians in Mariupol to ‘lay down arms’

Russia on Monday AEDT called on Ukrainian forces to lay down their arms in the eastern port city of Mariupol and issued an ultimatum. 

Russian and Ukrainian forces continue to fight for control of the port city of Mariupol, where 400,000 residents remain trapped. 

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appealed to Israel for help pushing back the Russian assault on his country. 

Senior Russian naval commander Post-Captain Andrei Paliy has died during fighting in Mariupol. 

The UN refugee agency said 10 million people had now been displaced across Ukraine, including some 3.4 million who have fled to neighbouring countries such as Poland. 

London: Russia on Monday AEDT called on Ukrainian forces to lay down their arms in the eastern port city of Mariupol where Moscow said a “terrible humanitarian catastrophe” was unfolding. 

“All who lay down their arms are guaranteed safe passage out of Mariupol,” Colonel-General Mikhail Mizintsev, the director of the Russian National Centre for Defence Management, said in a briefing distributed by the defence ministry.

Mizintsev said humanitarian corridors for civilians would be opened eastwards and westwards out of Mariupol at 10am Moscow time (6pm AEDT) on Monday. 

Ukraine has until 5am Moscow time (1pm AEDT) to respond to the offer on humanitarian corridors and laying down arms, he said.
