China Missile Test Has Ominous Implications

　　Sources believe the test involved an upgraded HQ-9 surface-to-air missile (SAM) equipped with a new exoatmospheric kill vehicle for use as a ballistic missile defense or anti-satellite (ASAT) system. China's land-based and ship-based HQ-9 is a variant of the Russian S-300V SAM.

　　However, the HQ-9 variant launched Jan. 11 is believed to have been "co-developed or stolen from the Russian S-400 Triumf," said Ian Easton, a research fellow at the Washington-based Project 2049 Institute
