| how he talked while he was making a tour of reports in 1979. I was still student then. I was impressed by the humble manner with which he told his stories. I still remember one incident he related about his personal battle experience. While he was leading a hot pursuit, two Vietnamese soldiers lobbed hand grenades at him. He was able to shoot down one enemy soldier at the same time dove into a cesspool to avoid the exploding hand grenades. Another story I remember is that while the Vietnamese soldiers held up in a underground bunker and refused to surrender, he ordered smoke and hand grenades to confuse the enemies inside. He then ran headlong himself alone inside the bunker in the midst of struggling enemies and fired a full clip and ran back out unscathed. I remember that he was saying that the human cries of the wounded enemies while he was firing at them was horrible. |
