The U.S. rotary rig count was down 7 rigs at 1,993 for the week of December 2, 2011. It is 280 rigs (18.6%) higher than last year. The number of rotary rigs drilling for oil increased 2 to 1,132. There are 390 more rigs targeting oil than last year. Rigs drilling for oil represent 56.8% percent of all drilling activity. Rigs directed toward natural gas were down 9 at 856. The number of rigs currently drilling for gas is 105 lower than last year's level of 961. Year-over-year oil exploration in the U.S. is up 52.6 percent. Gas exploration is down 10.9 percent. The weekly average of crude oil spot prices is 15.7 percent higher than last year and natural gas spot prices are 19.6 percent lower. Canadian rig activity is unchanged at 484 for the week of December 2, 2011 and is 35 (7.8%) higher than last year's rig count. Canadian drilling falls rapidly in the spring to avoid environmental damage moving drilling equipment during the spring thaw and rainy season. With wide weather related seasonal swings, even year-over-year comparisons can lead to incorrect conclusions.
