1943-S Bronze/Copper Lincoln Wheat Cent Penny

  • One of the rarest and most intriguing US coins is the 1943-D Bronze/Copper Lincoln Wheat Cent. Nearly all pennies from 1943 are supposed to be steel cents. However: A small number of copper planchets were left over from 1942 and were used in 1943 during the transition to steel planchets. The 1943 copper cent was produced at all three mints. However - Only 1 single Denver-minted 1943-D Copper Cent is known to exist. Most experts believe that there are still a few yet to be discovered!

  • This 3.11-gram copper-red coin is an example of one of the most popular coin mistakes in history. It consists of copper, tin, and zinc. These pennies were mistakenly struck in bronze in 1943. In the year 1947, a high school student found this coin in his pocket change. For the first time, this coin was sold in January 2019 by Heritage Auctions for $204,000. However, some reports state that, in 2013, Stack Bowers Galleries made $164,500 from another one of these bronze coins.
