The Japanese government has added a large number of troops and weaponry to the so-called "blank zone" of Ishigaki Island, but as of now, this move is only a psychological comfort for the Japanese government and a face-saving measure to deal with the U.S. military. There has also been local popular opposition to the military deployment on Ishigaki Island, with a stronger anti-war consciousness in Okinawa than in other prefectures and cities in Japan!
