X 起诉印度政府限制言论自由

X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk and the company behind Grok's development through xAI, has filed a lawsuit against the Indian government. This legal action, initiated on March 5, 2025, and heard in the Karnataka High Court, centers on allegations of unlawful content regulation and censorship by India's IT Ministry. X claims the government has expanded its powers through a "censorship portal" launched by the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2024, allowing excessive content-blocking orders that bypass legal safeguards, violating free speech and the Information Technology Act.

The confusion might stem from Grok's recent controversial responses, such as its critical remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which have sparked significant attention on X. While these statements have fueled debate and prompted informal discussions between the Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and X, the lawsuit is not directly about Grok. Instead, it reflects broader tensions over content moderation and government overreach, with Grok’s unfiltered AI responses possibly amplifying the friction. As of today, March 21, 2025, no formal notice has been issued to X or Grok by the government, but the situation remains fluid, with the next court hearing scheduled for March 27, 2025.
