'Issues under discussion': MEA on transgression in Arunachal Pradesh by China along LAC

Over the past month, the Line of Actual Control (LAC) has witnessed both a transgression and a series of meetings with the Chinese, highlighting the dynamic situation along the border. A transgression occurred at RK Point, Asaphila, in Arunachal Pradesh, involving approximately 30 personnel from the People's Liberation Army (PLA) of China crossing the 54 Axis.

In response to the incident, Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, stated, "There are ongoing discussions on the matter through military and diplomatic channels. Whenever such issues arise, they are addressed accordingly."

According to sources, a series of developments transpired along the LAC-

On January 22, a group of six PLA officers and a private engaged in a "cordial" conversation in Sikkim during the morning hours. Additionally, a ground commanders meeting, typically involving middle-level officers from both armies, took place in Chushul, Ladakh, on the same day.

Armies had a similar meeting the subsequent day facilitated by ground commanders, at Hot Springs in East Ladakh. This location holds historical significance as it was a site where soldiers from both countries confronted each other directly after the clash in Galwan in June 2020. Further engagements ensued, including another ground commanders' meeting at Hot Springs on January 25.

In the middle sector, notable meetings have taken place, including an unplanned encounter between ground commanders in the Lipulekh area of Uttarakhand during this period. Additionally, there were a couple of banner drills, where patrols from both armies displayed their flags, and an exchange of gifts occurred on Republic Day.

In the eastern regions of Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, there have been approximately twelve meetings between soldiers from both countries, with three conducted at a slightly higher level, including one on Republic Day.

General Manoj Pande, the Chief of Army Staff, expressed his welcome for such meetings during his Army Day briefing last month. He emphasized that these interactions play a crucial role in clarifying issues and addressing problems at the local level, thereby contributing to regional stability. It is evident that regular dialogues serve to diminish the likelihood of conflict.
